Gen 9 VGC's Star Players (Top 5 Pokemon!)

It's the first season of gen 9 VGC! This season is going to be filled with action, excitement and most importantly: new Pokemon to build around! So which ones work well? What old favorites can we dig up? Let's take a look at some of the most popular options so far:

1. Murkrow

Murkrow is the most used Pokemon in the VGC metagame, and for good reason. This bird Pokémon can set up Tailwind thanks to Prankster, which gives its status moves priority. This allows it to speed up its teammate and itself for later turns.

It also packs Haze, which is very useful for countering the very common Tatsugiri and Dodonzo combo.

Murkrow is a top-notch support. If you're playing in competitive doubles in any capacity, you should definitely be considering this Pokémon on your team.

2. Tatsugiri and Dondozo

Tatsugiri and Dondozo are a great offensive combination. They have the same typing and when they're on the field together, they become nearly unstoppable.

The main reason this works is because Tatsugiri's ability allows it to go into Dondozo and sharply raise all its stats. This alone would make any old combination of 2 Pokemon shine, but Dodonzo's already respectable stats and moves help tremendously. Combine all this with a solid defensive typing to counteract the 2v1 matchup that's inevitable with this pairing, and you've got a powerhouse!

Also, consider how much better your team's special attacks would be if one of its members was immune to physical/special moves? It makes things like Psychic-types or Dark-types much more effective!

3. Ceruledge

Ceruledge is a good Pokemon. It's got great attack, and it can outspeed much of the meta. Armarouge also has the privilege of being Fire-type, which allows a STAB counter to Trick Room teams featuring Meowscarada. Beyond that, it has a great movepool that allows it control over many games through the sheer threat it poses, if left unchecked.

4. Meowscarada

Meowscarada is a great pokemon for Trick Room teams that might otherwise lack coverage. Its signature move Flower Trick is a very strong attack, never missing and always critting. If that won't do, the ability Protean ensures that every attack Meowscarada makes gets STAB.

5. Gholdengo

Gholdengo is a quite powerful offensive Pokemon, able to handle most matchups with a single move: the signature Make it Rain. Gholdengo has a solid typing as well, making it harder to hit super-effectively

Gholdengo's stats are great as well—it has high Speed and Attack scores, which means that if you're able to keep it alive long enough it can sweep opponents easily with either its powerful signature attack or any number of coverage options.

There are a number of other Pokemon that could be added to this list, but I believe these are the most impactful ones. I hope this gives you a jumping off point for your own VGC team building. Good luck!
