Mega Evolution: A Potential Return?

Mega Evolution was a beloved mechanic by many Pokemon players from the day it was announced (or more likely, the day it was leaked.)  Even from just bare details of the mechanic, Nintendo Life's Thomas Whitehead made it clear that "it's all shaping up nicely."  The phenomenal reception Megas had eventually led to similar mechanics in every later generation thus far.  Gen 7 had Z-Moves, gen 8 introduced Gigantamax transformations, and Gen 9 brings with it the Terastal mechanic.

Needless to say, Mega Evolution is a very important part of modern Pokemon's history.  In fact, it's so important, that in a game with endgame themes of past and future, it makes sense to return to this masterwork of Pokemon design.  Beyond that, it likely will, thanks to the likely upcoming DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

The Mega Evolution mechanic was introduced in the Kalos region of X and Y.  Coincidentally, many rumors for the DLC involve either a tour of the Kalos region itself, or an important role for Korrina, the region's Fighting-type gym leader.  Korrina's also special for another reason.  She is one of the few people in the whole of Kalos with the ability to Mega Evolve her Pokemon.  In fact, the fight that teaches you how to use the Mega Ring in X and Y is against Korrina and one of her Lucario. It makes sense, then, that a DLC rumored to feature the region of Mega Evolution, or its gatekeeper, would also revive the previous transformation.

In addition, the last generation to have Megas in it was gen 7.  The "Mega-like" mechanic of Sun and Moon was the Z-Move.  This wasn't a permanent transformation that affects specific Pokemon, unlike Megas. Each Z Crystal gave a Pokemon the ability to use 1 uber-powerful Z-Move.  In this way, it has a lot of similarities with Scarlet/Violet's Terastalization.  They both feature crystal theming, power up specific parts of a Pokemon instead of fully transforming specific 'mons, and (if I'm correct) will both be featured in a generation with Mega Evolutions also present.

These factors all point to one idea: Mega Evolution could well be back very soon. And I, alongside much of the fanbase, hope it will.
